Backups & templates
Keep a snapshot of your Discord setup, then choose missing roles, categories or channels to recreate. You review the changes before Guardy creates anything. Existing roles and channels stay unchanged.
You can keep five snapshots per server, free on every plan, with no AI credits. Snapshots are saved manually, not on a schedule.
Before you start
- You must be the Discord server owner. Manage Server or Administrator alone does not grant access to this feature.
- Guardy needs Administrator to save and apply a snapshot. Its role must also be above the roles you want it to recreate.
- For Use in another server, you must currently own both the source and destination servers, with Guardy in the destination too.
Open Settings → Backups & templates in your dashboard. You can also find it from Server planner.
Save a snapshot
- Choose Save snapshot.
- Keep the suggested server name and date, or enter a name you will recognise later. The name is optional.
- Save, then review the captured items and coverage.
Saving a snapshot does not change your Discord setup. At five snapshots, delete one you no longer need before saving another. Guardy does not automatically replace an older snapshot.
What a snapshot covers
| Saved setup | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Regular roles | Names, supported colours, permissions, display grouping and whether they can be mentioned |
| Categories | Names and supported permission overwrites |
| Text and voice channels | Names, supported channel settings, category relationships and permission overwrites |
| Announcement and forum channels | Supported settings, where the destination can represent them |
Coverage is shown with the snapshot. An unsupported item is marked Unavailable with a reason. Channels with permissions granted or denied to individual members are excluded; Guardy's own bot permission entry can be preserved. Roles managed by bots or integrations cannot be recreated.
Snapshots do not include messages, attachments, members, member role assignments, bans, invites, webhooks, Stage channels, media channels, threads or forum posts. Server-wide settings and Guardy feature settings are not restored. Unsupported role icons, gradients or channel details are not silently converted into something else.
Preview selective recovery
- Open a snapshot and choose Preview restore for its source server.
- Select the missing items you want back. Nothing starts selected when you first open a snapshot. Expand Saved settings & permissions on an item to inspect what was captured.
- Check the categories and roles needed by your selected channels. Guardy includes these dependencies and shows them in the preview.
- Choose Review selected items.
- Review the destination server, item count and any permission warnings. If selected roles include powerful permissions, acknowledge them before continuing. Keep the page open while restoring. When ready, confirm Create N items in [server], using the count and server shown.
Previewing does not change Discord. The preview separates items into Create, Already exists and Unavailable. Existing items are recognised by their original identity or a previous confirmed restore, not by name alone. A different channel or role with the same name is not treated as a match.
This recovers deleted setup. It does not roll back edits to a channel or role that still exists, remove new channels, or replace your current server with the snapshot.
Saved channel permission rules list Allow and Deny permissions for each entry. Permissions not listed are not set by that rule. These are explicit rules, not a calculation of what every member can access; other roles and Administrator also affect access.
If a required role's permissions or the server's @everyone permissions differ from the snapshot, affected channels are blocked. Expand the permission differences to compare their saved and current values. Resolve the difference in Discord if appropriate, then make a new preview. Guardy does not change existing permissions or drop rules to force a channel through.
Use your setup in another server
Choose Use in another server, select a server you currently own, then review and select the items there. The destination gets its own preview before anything is created. After copying, select the new channels and roles in the destination's Guardy features. The source server's feature settings are not copied.
This uses your saved snapshot as a private template. It does not publish a share link, import a JSON file or offer a public gallery. Regular roles and channels are created as new objects; existing same-named objects are left alone. Unsupported dependencies, including source-only integration roles, can make an item unavailable.
Guardy's five ready-made templates are a separate starting point in Server planner. Their setup and Undo controls do not apply to snapshot recovery.
After applying
The result shows what Guardy created and which items could not be completed. Created channels and roles have new Discord IDs. The completion checklist helps you finish setup in the destination server:
- Reconnect Guardy settings: choose the new channels and roles in any settings that used the deleted objects, such as a welcome channel, alert destination or role menu.
- Assign recreated roles: add the appropriate members to the new roles in Discord.
- Check the order: review channel and role positions in Discord and adjust them where needed.
These are manual steps. Settings are not automatically reconnected, and recreated roles are not assigned to members. Guardy does not reorder existing channels or roles. Recreated roles sit below Guardy; their exact position among existing roles is not guaranteed.
Your snapshot stays available, and another preview recognises objects already created from it rather than creating them again.
Keep the page open while Guardy creates the selected setup. Leaving the page pauses after the current item; return and choose Continue restore to carry on. You can also choose Stop restore. Anything already created stays in Discord; stopping is not Undo. Guardy does not automatically delete completed work.
If a restore stops
- The server changed or the preview expired: read the server again or choose Preview remaining items. Guardy keeps your unfinished choices that are still available. Review the fresh preview and confirm again before creation resumes. Completed items stay in place.
- Permissions or access changed: check that you still own the relevant servers, that Guardy has Administrator, and that its role is high enough.
- Discord rejected an item: read its reason. Other completed items remain; review the remaining setup before another attempt.
- The outcome is uncertain: choose Check Discord. Guardy checks whether the exact item was created. If it cannot establish the result, the item stays unavailable to prevent duplicates. Contact support with the run reference shown. Do not repeatedly create the same item manually while the result is unresolved.
A snapshot cannot be deleted while a restore is active or its outcome is unresolved.
How this differs from configuration export
Download configuration gives you a readable JSON record of supported Guardy settings. It is not an import format. Backups & templates saves supported Discord roles and channels for the recovery workflow above. Neither restores message history.
